I'm not about to review a movie on my blog; as I find it pretty annoying when others do it. I will just say I thought it was a beautiful harmony of incredible Audio/Visuals, and the first good use of Uncanny Valley I've ever seen.

Also; The art book is pretty nice;
It is more of a 'production' and 'thought process behind decisions' book as opposed to just a flurry of artwork, and there is no real 3D art in there either (which I personally preferred).

He's also bringing my favourite comic book artist, while I was growing up; John Romita Jr. I can't express how much I'm excited at the thuoght of seeing this guy. In Your Face

People seem to often find face topology so alien and hard to learn so I decided to just label out the basics of what I found to be useful rules when learning to get functioning topology that can deform well, and helps sell the forms correctly. So if you find this helpful thats great, because I sure wish somebody taught me this shit when I was learning. On that note; less talking more images.

The method I use to make heads is edge modelling instead of starting with a box. Which is essentially where you start with a plane and extrude out from it sequentially, but whatever method you use is up to you. This post is just to talk about why I put my loops where I do etc. If none of this makes any sense whatsoever that's fine. Just be a piano instructor or a stuntman instead.

~ Essentially, I almost always start modelling from the eyes outward, with loops around the eyes keeping roughly the same number of polygons on the top as the bottom. Although if there were more polygons on the bottom by a little, then this would usually be okay.

~ I would also make sure there is a loop running across the nose around the cheek and then through the chin. This is helps deformation when smiling or frowning as these parts all move as a family of shapes when animated.

~ A common mistake I often see is to make the eye loops just radiate outward on and on. This is a bad thing for various reasons that I'm far too lazy to explain. Anyway, to stop this I would run a loop from the top of the nose across the top of the cheekbone up around the brow and down the nose again.

~ Another result of stopping the eyeloops from radiating outward forever is a frame that goes across the forehead and down under the nose. Sometimes I do run the loop across the middle of the nose instead of under the nostrils but the theory of framing the loops is still the same in both methods.

~ I also find that if I don't have a line of polygons that run from the outer bottom eyelid towards the general direction of the nose (or under the nose in this case) then its very hard to change directions of other flow lines so I always try to make sure its there.

~ Ideally you want to have next to no triangles on a face mesh because they just don't deform well at all under animation. Changing directions of flowlines without creating triangles is a bitch to learn, but it's pretty straight forward once you understand the power of 5poles. A 5pole is where 5 edges splay out from a vert to create a group of polygons that allow change of direction. I've labelled where I usually put my 5poles. They are usually a slight hindrance to animation but not as destructive as triangles, so placing them in the correct places is very important to learn.

Above is a picture of the real mistake in not using 5poles. Faces become a flow of quads that just flow back across the side of the face without following any real facial contours or bone structure. Don't let this happen. It's bad and will cause polar bears with chainsaws for arms to break into your house and attack you.

~ Make sure all your flow lines are smooth and fairly evenly spaced. If areas get suddenly dense or sparse it will look horrific when shaded or have odd spots on it when textured, so remembering to keep the edge flow smooth is pretty important. Starting with a fairly low amount polygons and then making it denser later makes topology a lot easier to control. Unless of course you don't like control; in which case you should start with hundreds of tiny polygons and you can bathe in your own frustration and masochistic ecstasy as it becomes more than you can handle.

This is an example of another head I made that's much denser in polygons. It doesn't exactly follow all the lines I just explained perfectly but are close enough for you to see the relationships are the same. High or low polycounts really don't effect the basics very much, just make sure your lines are clean and purposeful and to check your mesh in all views (especially 3/4 view that's the reeeeally important one).

I'll get to the point; This is Hatsune Miku. She’s a Japanese pop diva who’s just started to play massive stadium concerts to sold out crowds. Her hair is blue, she dresses like Sailor Moon, and she’ll only appear in concerts via a 3D hologram. Oh, and she's completely Fictional.

Gorillaz have done this before, and this seems to be an extension of it. But at least they weren't selling out stadium concerts and they concentrate on the music not the characters... I mean come on. She's not even tangible, yet the hologram is making a fuckload of cash doing live shows. Did I forget to say that she is just lights and audio playback? Well I think I should I again: She isn't fucking real.

One thing I've had a revelation about, concerning anatomy reference is that sometimes there are very detailed drawings online of muscle groups, and bones etc that are actually incorrect. I don't know how this happens, but it does.

I basically realised when getting into the industry that its just a better idea to get all your reference from anatomy books if you can, rather than some random google images that might or might not match up.

When I was near the end of my first year at university 2 years ago someone (i forget who) said to me:

"Don't you think you're being a bit arrogant to think you could be a character artist straight out of school?"

It kinda messed me up, and made me think I was being stupid and aiming too high. The conversation basically was them telling me that I should become an environment artist first, and build a portfolio of props and different objects then try to become a character artist once I had been in the industry for a year or more.

Okay, fair enough I still haven't become a character artist yet, and I'm still not even completed my schooling but I feel like I have a real chance now. I'm just writing this down to remind myself never to try and crush someone's vision.

Nobody can ever tell YOU what you can or should do. Their expectations are just predictions, and the only person who can really predict what your capable of is YOU; because only YOU know how much work your going to put in to get what you want. When someone says something is impossible, they are only saying what's impossible for them, not necessarily for you.

Never let someone who is living their Nightmare tell you that you can't live your Dream.

Sometimes I say things. Neither objectively, or subjectively; I just respond to the world with words.

I was always told that a statement is just an opinion if you don't understand the source of it. So, sometimes when I'm speaking or sharing advice I state the source first e.g.

"A professional character artist said to me..."

and then I begin explaining what they said. I do this with everything I can, I hate to say something that I have been told and not let people understand my source. I recently listened to myself objectively talking and it suddenly occurred to me:

"Wait. Does this sound like I'm just name dropping? Like I'm just showing off at the fact that I have spoken to this seemingly important person"

It made me second guess myself, because I'm absolutely clueless as to if the person I'm speaking sees me as 'explaining my source' or if I'm 'bragging about who the fuck I know'.I thought about it more and it started to leak into other issues. I started to think;

"when I explain why I don't like something, do they see me as undermining their point of view? Or do they see me as just sharing my way of thinking"

The problem is perspective. I have no idea of what someone will translate my words into once it leaves me and reaches their ears. This is probably the same reason why there is one bible and approximately 38000 different denominations of Christianity that cannot agree as to what God's message says. When I explain to someone why I don't agree with a teaching method, I personally feel like I'm just explaining my thoughts on the validity of a process, but the other person hearing me could just be hearing a rant or a bash at someone's integrity.

I couldn't ever solve this even if I said 'nothing'. Just to be quiet and neither create positive or negative input nor comment on any output could potentially lead to someone thinking I'm isolating myself or not thinking highly enough of them to communicate with.

I've walked into a room and said hello to people before, and then have one of them simply look at me blankly without response. In that situation I've thought to myself 'well that is fucking rude' but maybe I could have just been 'effectively' reading the bible wrong all this time and coming out with the wrong denomination of Christianity because of it. From now on I'm going to CHOOSE to find the positive out of every vaguely neutral thing people say or do.

It's all perspective, and I believe that we are defined but what other people think of us (regardless of how much people say they don't care what other people think of them). Instead of me worrying about what people think of everything I say, I'm going to take full control of what I think of others. I'm sure it will help redefine my outlook on life...

Last year those crazy Japs made a 1:1 scaled, 50 foot Gundam statue to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their classic anime series. Well apparently they wanna bring it back with extras.
The Gundam will be re-erected again this year in July, to coincide with the legitimate date of “Gundam”’s 30th anniversary. It’ll also be in Shizuoka instead of Tokyo and clutching an emanating “beam laser” this time around. Oh, and the head moves too; so I'm guessing it'll be flying by 2012...

It will be available in North America the first week of September. The new PS3 slim comes with a 120GB HDD, and is 33% smaller, and 36% lighter. It also offers a lower price point of $299.

The 80GB PS3 (current model) will be discounted to $300, whereas the 160GB PS3 will be $400. There will be a new PS3 logo as well as modifications to the official name from PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3 (as to not be shouting all the time I'm assuming).

Only two small problems with PS3 slim: No backwards compatibility and only 2 USB slots. With all that said, I'd rather have a PS2 thanks. Or a bacon sandwich. Either will do.

“Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places" is the new solo installation and exhibition by London-based artist INSA. A multimedia mix of large scale installations, canvases, photography, prints, exclusive collaboration products and a stunning animation made up of 35 frames which were hand painted across east London in 7 days. I have no idea of how much black and white paint INSA used, but I the results meant that the crew and I saw some pretty dope shit.

I never do male models really, but I plan on doing Thor for the Comicon Challenge. So here's my attempt at trying to get some last minute practice on doing a man's face before I start my model.
I'm also hoping the new Comicon helps me overcome my dislike for zBrush. There's a part of my soul that's dying inside to know that I'm going to make a model without getting the opportunity to look at naked ladies as reference :(

The newest Comicon Competition has just been announced. This was the first main competition I ever entered and I improved exponentially as a result. Can't wait to see what people come up with.

Also; the site asked to do an interview of my 2008 entry, to get a productive student's point of view I think. Would have loved for them to choose a recent model instead of one of my early models but that would defeat the purpose of the interview I suspect. Anyway hit the image to go to the interview page.

Nikola Tesla’s birthday was yesterday and the Google company changed their typical logo image into a Tesla Coil to celebrate his birthday. The only thing is that deep in the picture is a hidden logo of the triforce... again (for the 8th time).

Was talking to my girl and a question came up that not many people have asked me before:

"What do you would you be working towards if you just weren't into what you're doing now?"

For some people they claim that they 'couldn't see themselves doing anything else', or they just never really thought about it. For me, I'm like 90% sure I would be on a fashion course. Specifically female shoe design; I think the femininity in platform heels is unrivaled to any other piece of clothing. Many of the blogs I follow are couture fashion and I could really see myself being good at it. Maybe if things were slightly different I would be in a classroom full of hot girls running my tape measure around some breasts instead of worrying about 3D programs... *sigh*

- There's a ton of innovation in Fashion Photography that I'd love to be a part of too, I got a bunch of favorite fashion photography blogs. Too many artforms just get into the habit of copying itself too often but fashion photography really ain't even like that, at all. I can respect that.

This was my first DomWar and I had a blast and learned a huge amount. More than I ever have from a single model, how can I ask for much more than that!?

I completely fucked up my score this month. A fantastic piece of fail. Too much socialising and not being serious, has led me to disappointment in myself. My number actually decreased down to an overall of 43%.

On reflection; my biggest hindrance to the speed of my learning/improving is consistency. I am sometimes very productive one week, then will go two weeks of doing virtually nothing because I'm wallowing in my self satisfaction about the productive week I had previously. And wallowing instead of training results in tiger uppercuts to the face from real life:
In order to stop this and become the best I can be, I am going to be weekly grading MYSELF on my productivity.
I have made myself a formula whereby;

★★ For every day that I have more than 2hours of (internet-less) productivity (e.g. Practice Anatomy, Model Something, Paint, Learn Something New, etc) I will give myself a pink circle on my weekly calendar.
★★ For every day that I do jack shit or don't achieve the minimum time of productivity I will give myself an orange strike:

This week is the first week I have done it but to further explain how I got my grades:

Monday - Finished Dom War,
Tuesday - Pretended to do work but didn't do jackshit.
Wednesday - Read 1/3rd of 'The Element' by Ken Robinson
Thursday - Blatantly did jackshit
Friday - Sketched out group project ideas/read more of 'The Element'
Saturday - On MSN all day
Sunday - Began my uni summer project (I realise its not Sunday yet but I vow to live up to this one)

I will then work out the percentage of the month and then try to beat that score the corresponding month. Eventually two hours minimum everyday will be second nature and I'll increase the minimum amount of time. If I ever fail a week, then I remove my internet for day in order to catch up on lost time.

Team Ico; makers of Shadow of the Colossus (probably one of the best games in the world ever) have a new video moving around the net of their next project. Don't know what that big feline thing is, but it clearly has had its wings clipped :(

~ Also, I need this PC in my life. It's the the smallest, most power-efficient Intel Atom PC. The specs are really reasonable. Waterresistant, temperatureresistant, shockresistant with an affordable price tag? My laptop is starting to look really unattractive about right now, hmmmmmmm...
